Statistics: How many people were infected and died as a result of infected blood products?

The data below provide information on how many people were infected with HCV (Hepatitis C Virus) and HIV (Human Immunodeficiency Virus) through infected blood products such as Factor VIII and Factor IX. This data is taken from the latest 2022 & 2023 information the Infected Blood Inquiry provided.

Many media articles and broadcast pieces, including recent ones, contain inaccurate information using figures which are far higher than those determined by the Infected Blood Inquiry. This is because those media reports rely on other wrong media reports, wrong data or inadvertent misinterpretations of older data. We encourage use of the latest sourced data below.

The Infected Blood Inquiry’s statistics experts found that, in the UK:

  • Around 1,250 people with bleeding disorders were infected with HIV [1].

  • 820 people with bleeding disorders, infected with HIV, have died as a result of their infections [2].

  • 2,400 – 5,000 people with bleeding disorders were infected with HCV (excluding those infected with HIV) [3].

  • 350 people with bleeding disorders, infected with HCV, died as a result of their infections [4].

  • From the above data, it can be seen that a total of 1,170 persons infected with HIV, HCV, or both, have died as a result of their infections.

  • Inquiry Experts “do not attempt to estimate onward-transmission to partners, children or others”. It is hoped that up-to-date data in this respect may be provided in the Inquiry’s final report.
