Professor Edward Tuddenham

Jason Evans Interview with Ed Tuddenham in 2016, key timestamps

  • 3:57 “I think the commercial interest clearly outweighed best practice and safety”

  • 4:21 - He thinks the decision not to use HT was taken largely on commercial grounds. Goes onto say HT wasn’t introduced as soon as it could have been.

  • 5:50 “the standard now for declaring interests are certainly better than they used to be” - on pharma consulting - “there can be conscious and unconscious bias”.

  • 6:40 - hospitality from pharma was “overwhelmingly lavish”.. “I could see how it could influence people”.. Says pharma spent money to “gain influence”

  • 7:00 talks more on this … “best restaurants”, “river cruises”, “marketing products”

  • 8:20 - on David Owens documents he says “it does look like part of a planned cover-up”

  • 10:05 - says had self-sufficiency been achieved “ we would have had a much lower rate of infection”... “there were opportunities missed”

  • Were you ever asked in the 1970s or early 1980s to research methods of pasteurising Factor VIII? (ref to this in para 43 of statement)

    • Would you have undertaken such research if asked?

    • Was there any technical reason why HT could not have been introduced sooner or was it simply a case of the research not having been done sooner?

  • In what capacity are you acting now or have you acted for the haemophilia society?

  • In para 33 of your statement you say it was in 1986 that patients were tested for HIV - were you aware of tests being carried out in 1984?

  • In para 43 you say “by the time changes could have been made” - is it not the case that changes could have been made at anytime?

  • In relation to para 62 - what is your understanding of the role that age plays in the morbidity of HIV infection without treatment?

    •  In retrospect, might fewer people overall have died from their HIV infection, if NHS concentrate was prioritised for adults and not children?

  • In relation to para 120(a) - were you aware of blood plasma collected from the gay community to create Hep B vaccine being skimmed off and used to create Factor concentrates?

  • Para 131.f.8 - do you think they should have?

  • In this 1983 article about AIDS, Tuddenham says “blood-derived factor viii is  unsatisfactory in so many ways” - what did you mean by that? https://drive.google.com/file/d/1f6uS7rgF67KLkBQvHuggn3gU2nh6mQc1/view?usp=sharing

  • Start of Page 35 of her RCP transcript - Christine Lee says “historically Katharine Dormandy had made cryoprecipitate at the Free and she had used that and she was quite reluctant to change to this new-fangled stuff. And it wasn‟t until 1978 when Peter Kernoff and the other new doctor Tuddenham--, Ted Tuddenham came they turned--, they changed everybody” - Does he agree with Christine Lee? https://drive.google.com/file/d/1GHZGo7_43t2CwZfWk0PvMvkqo6zXTvmw/view?usp=sharing

  • Page 6 of this document, Tuddenham is quoted as  saying:  "it was the intention of the Royal Free Hospital to keep a certain reserve of commercial concentrate to supply other haemophilia centres" Tuddenham : "agreed that it was necessary to maintain a stockpile" https://drive.google.com/file/d/1YSqsF3RG2xcWpgfd7FthXFCLTYvJfHu8/view?usp=sharing

    • Also at the very end of this document there is a fairly important note from Kernoff (Royal Free)… "the mother of a patient on home treatment pricked herself and subsequently developed hepatitis. Before becoming ill, she had donated blood"..."family members of patients on home treatment should be considered high risks for transmission of hepatitis and should not be allowed to donate blood" - Worth getting Tuddenham views/recollection on that
