Dr Diana Walford
WS Questions
2.29 - Did Tovey provide a reason why he kept her in the dark about said discussions?
Did she ever raise this as a concern with anyone?
Does she think she should have been aware of the content of those discussions?
2.35 - Did this involve work on Hepatitis or AIDS?
15.21 - Upon reflection, what disadvantages does she see now?
31.4 - On what basis and under what circumstances, with what resourcing, does she estimate “at least” 4 - 5 years? ( which conveniently takes us to the advent of HT products...)
31.5 - Would concern about plasma supply have been quelled if focus had been shifted away from concentrate and toward cryo?
Is it her understanding that the UK had always been self-sufficient in cryo before the advent of mass concentrate production at BPL?
And this could have been restored at any time by re-shifting choice in primary product prioritisation to cryo?
31.7 - By her logic, IF the same was true in 1974/5 - she is saying this could have been done by 1978/9?
32.5 - Was Hepatitis considered to be “undesirable material”?
How normal was it for NIBSC to approve a product release where the product was known to contain “undesirable material”?
33.4 - In this case, is there any reason she is aware of why BPL would not send a sample of every batch for release to the NIBSC?
So she would expect every BPL batch would have been logged with NIBSC?
70.3 - Does she accept that Montaignier did not simply “describe” LAV - his important 1983 paper presented the Isolation of the virus he termed LAV.
71.2 - She says the feeling was that it was “likely” AIDS was transmitted by blood products. What steps did she / the department take to make the haemophilia community aware of this?
71.4 - Regards “haemophiliac AIDS” - does she agree that in any event, AIDS was as a result of receiving Factor VIII - whatever the specifics may be?
80.4 - On what basis is she saying that After the introduction of cryo “many” haemophiliacs still died prematurely?
On what basis is she saying that concentrates improved life expectancy beyond that which cryo provided?
86.32 She describes the cause of AIDS as being “heavily contested” at this time. Does she really mean that? Would it be more accurate to say the general consensus was that AIDS was most likely caused by a transmissible agent but other theories existed?
Is she aware of anyone “heavily contesting” the notion of a transmissible agent?
86.34 - Her final sentence paints an “all or nothing” scenario in terms of treatment. Why?
86.63 - In relation to the last sentence here. Can it be said then that the “no conclusive evidence” line was ambiguous and not sufficiently clear?
Should the purpose, in both instances, have been to tell the unambiguous known truth?
93.9 - Is she aware that in the 1960s, all manner of surgery was conducted without problem under cover of cryo? So, just because surgery is being undertaken, does that really alleviate ethical issues when a safer product can be used?

In relation to this press article - https://www.dailymail.co.uk/health/article-4662690/Patients-infected-contaminated-samples.html
It says “Dr Walford, 73, refused to discuss her recollections of the meeting when approached” - Why did she refuse to speak to the press?
“she said: 'I will not be drawn into discussing it.” - Why didn’t she want to be drawn in to discussing it?

Can she expand on the last paragraph? Why did she decline to provide a statement?
Was she consulted at any point upon the DH Self Sufficiency report circa 2006?
Was she ever asked to give evidence to the Archer Inquiry?
Did she have any other involvement in the Archer Inquiry?
Please can we take her to these 1981 minutes - it is said “The DHSS were keen that a prospective study of patients undergoing elective treatment requiring concentrate should be undertaken”... “to provide a collection of well documented sera and other specimens for the use in development of serological tests for non-A, non-B Hepatitis.”
Does she see any ethical issues with doing this?
Were haemophiliacs infected with Hep C in order to help DHSS in producing a test for the virus?
